Gears for Kids

For more than 100 years, Children’s Institute has supported children and families in healing from traumatic experiences. We work with 30,000 individuals in Los Angeles communities where decades of underinvestment and racist policies have resulted in poverty and lack of opportunity. Children’s Institute believes that real change starts with collaboration and trusted partnerships with community members and other local organizations. We offer high-quality early education and youth programs, counseling services, parenting supports, workforce and community leadership development, and advocacy for community investment where it is needed most.

About Children’s Institute

East Side Riders Bike Club is a volunteer organization in South Central Los Angeles with a mission to improve Watts through community service, charity work, and bike programs aimed at keeping local youth out of gang activity. ESR seeks to positively impact the following community needs: Inadequate Organized Recreational Outlets for local youth in the Watts area, a community that is rife with high rates of child obesity, asthma and other respiratory challenges amongst youth; lack of Safe Passage and Travel Routes: while Watts is a very small community, there are clear gang-related boundaries and territories that limit the movement of local youth based on where they reside; Lack of Resources- families lack the resources to purchase bikes, safety gear, and/or other necessary equipment.

You're Invited to be Our Guest

Over the last 10 years, Haworth Los Angeles has partnered with local community youth-centered organizations. With a vision to bless families and children in our communities, Gears for Kids was started. This unique event brings architecture + design community partners together to teach kids how to build and ride a bike. The exciting part? That new bike is theirs to keep. The event trains kids and families important rules of the road and hosts an obstacle course where the kids can test out their new wheels. Outfitted with helmets, bike accessories and riding away with a bike to their own, this event leaves meaningful impressions on lives in our communities.

A family-fun event creating lasting memories with Children’s Institute of Los Angeles, one bike and one child at a time.This unique event brings architecture + design community partners together to come alongside children of Compton in bike building, learning important rules of the road and testing their new two wheels on an outdoor obstacle course. As a team, each firm helps assemble personalized bicycles alongside a child and see them go home fully outfitted with a bike, new helmet, and bike lock.This year’s event will be held at CII’s new Compton Campus, celebrating a new home for Early Childhood programs bringing high-quality early learning and development opportunities.
